On 2nd December 2023, a selection of VMBC’s seniors braved the snow and ice to compete at Rutherford Head.

The women’s 4+ had the earliest and coldest start, despite the sub-zero conditions, the women had a fantastic race, winning a pennant for being the fastest Durham college crew in the W4+ category.

In the afternoon the women’s 8+ had a similarly great race, especially as this was the first race of the season for most of the crew, and the first for the squad in an 8+. The women had a very respectable finish position of 6th out of 14 Durham college crews, a strong position to be in as we look toward the new year.

Finally, for the men’s 4+ (apart from their cox Charlotte), this was the whole crew’s first race beyond the Wear! This meant that the men got some very useful, and enjoyable experience racing on a longer, tidal stretch of river. Despite their relative lack of experience, the men had a fantastic, clean race finishing 3rd in their band and less than 3 second behind the other Durham college crews.

Overall, it was another great day to be VMBC.
